The weather cooperated in making this one of the more outstanding demonstrations, with the facilities being ideal for this type of event. Each of the firms participating cooperated fully with the Committee in making this the best demonstration ever conducted by MCAA.
The Opening Session on Monday morning officially launched MCAA's 37th Annual Conference with President C. DeWitt Brown presiding. An impressive ceremony consisting of the presentation of the colors by the U.S. Naval Air Station Color Guard and the Pledge of Allegiance preceded the invocation. Due to scheduling problems, President Brown delayed his Annual Report to the membership so that Congressman Steve Bartlett and Dr. John T. Dunlop could address the delegates. Congressman Bartlett, representing the 3rd District of Texas reviewed potential legislation to be introduced into the coming session of Congress, highlighting those areas which directly affected the construction industry and the mason contractor. Being on the House's Education and Labor Committee, he was well appraised of the activities of all current legislation and its impact upon the masonry industry.
Following Congressman Bartlett, Dr. John T. Dunlop, former U.S. Secretary of Labor, dwelled mainly upon the theme, "What is New and What is the Same," using various examples to emphasize his point.
Following Dr. Dunlop's remarks, President Brown took time out to present MCAA's highest honor, the Lead Man Award, to five outstanding individuals involved with the masonry industry: W. C. Dentinger, MCAA Immediate Past President; Joseph Szabo, Chairman, Bricklayers and Trowel Trades International Pension Fund and Don Lowery, retired Promotion Manager, Target Products Division. Also
