Toronto Design Winner
Mississauga Civic Centre
The Toronto Masonry Industry Promotion Fund in co-operation with the Toronto Society of Architects sponsored the 2nd Annual Awards Competition and Banquet with the Mississauga Civic Centre winning top honors. Over two hundred architects, mason contractors, union representatives and their guests heard Toronto Mayor Arthur Eggleton make the announcement and present to the architectural firm of Jones & Kirkland a special painting entitled "The Last Frontier" commissioned by the Toronto Society of Architects and the Promotion Fund from artist Chris Temple.
The new 400,000 square foot city hall, civic square and parking facility costing $58.5 million was designed by the architectural firm of Jones & Kirkland. The project team was: E. Jones, M. Kirkland, S. Teeple, B. Gillespie, G. Lang, M. James, K. Wallace and M. Sterling. The general contractor was Jackson-Lewis Company Limited with masonry by Merison Masonry. Brick supplier was Webster & Sons, Ltd. with Primeau-Argo Block being the concrete masonry producer.
The jury for the competition consisted of Dan Gaito, Phillip H. Carter, Eugene George, Peter Martini. John Elliott and Lou Ponikvar. The outstanding cover photograph by Design Archives/Burley.
St. Clair Region Design Winner
The St. Clair Region Masonry Promotion Group and the St. Clair Society of Architects (Windsor-Sarnia Area) sponsored the first Awards Competition with the Sir George Etienne Cartier Hall being selected the winner. Designed by Architects Lamb & Jorden of Chatham the masonry was performed by C & R Masonry. Judges for the competition were: Evelyn McLean, Jal C. Wadia, Vince Rosati and Luciano Mascarin.
