Honor Corky Doyle
At the March meeting of the Masonry Institute, Inc. (Washington, D.C.), Corky Doyle received a Lifetime Membership Award. Corky has served the Institute in virtually every imaginable capacity other than president, a position he has declined at least a half dozen times during the past thirty-three years. Others who have received the award are: Joe Garrity, Durwood Boeglen, Anthony Izzo, Sr., Nunzio Litterio and John MacBryde.
People & Events...
James R. Platt retired on June 30th as president of Mid-East Region BIA in Canton, OH. Jim had been with the Region since April of 1954. The Construction Products Manufacturers Council (CPMC) has ceased operations on April 30, 1988. CPMC was first established as The Producer's Council in 1921. Joe Dompier has been promoted to the position of vice president/general manager of Pettibone Michigan Corp., and Bill Poe has been promoted to the position of vice president of marketing and sales.
Ronald J. Gafford has been named president of Austin Commercial, Inc. He will also serve as a vice president and director for Austin Industries, Inc. the parent company. Gafford succeeds E. Vernon Brown, who was the founding president for Austin Commercial in 1976.
J. A. "Tony" Wintz, III, has joined the Washington, D.C. branch of Law Engineering as a senior consultant.
Move Toward Joint Showcase
Meeting at the Fourth Masonry Summit, association executives from the masonry industries agreed to support, in principle, the creation of an annual joint industry showcase. To be known as the "World of Masonry," this combined exposition and educational meeting will be inaugurated in 1990, according to the industry executives.
NBS FIRE STUDY
National Bureau of Standards has reported that Renata Zwiers, a researcher from Construction Technology Laboratories, Inc., representing the Portland Cement Association, will be working in the NBS Center for Fire Research over the next year and a half to study the role of compartmentation on fire growth in buildings. Compartmentation is a fire safety design strategy that uses room partitions to impede fire growth.
Francik to V.P.-Operations
John L. Baldwin, president of Pittsburgh Corning Corporation, recently announced that Charles A. Francik has been appointed vice president Operations. Previously, he was vice president-Manufacturing. In his new position, Francik, also a member of Pittsburgh Corning Europe's Board of Directors, is responsible for all operating functions. The vice presidents of Sales & Marketing, Human Resources, and Finance will each report to Francik.
In addition, Pittsburgh Corning's plant managers at Sedalia, Missouri and Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, the manager of the Corporation's International Department and the manufacturing development supervisor will also report to the vice president-Operations.
National Wire Expands
National Wire Products Industries, Inc., headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, has acquired the stock of Jim Taylor, Inc., manufacturers of Ty-Wal Masonry Products. The newly acquired company previously was a wholly owned subsidiary of Dayton Superior Corporation. The announcement was made by Gerald A. Seling, president of National Wire.
The group's statement of purpose for this event describes it as coordinating "the Masonry Industry's marketing, educational, and exposition activities." The "World of Masonry" will showcase all aspects of masonry, including research and development activities, combining the expositions and presentations of several industry groups.
Represented in this statement of purpose are: the Brick Institute of America, the Building Stone Institute, the Expanded Shale Clay and Slate Institute, the Mason Contractors Association of America, the National Association of Brick Distributors, the National Concrete Masonry Association, the National Lime Association, the Portland Cement Association, and The Masonry Society. A task force of the executives attending the meeting has been assigned to begin planning the event.

Recognizing the need to coordinate the Masonry Industry's marketing, educational and exposition activities; the Brick Institute of America, the Building Stone Institute, the Expanded Shale Clay and Slate Institute, the Mason Contractors Association of America, the National Association of Brick Distributors, the National Concrete Masonry Association, The National Lime Association, the Portland Cement Association, and The Masonry Society have voted to support, in principle, an annual "WORLD OF MASONRY." This event will showcase all aspects of the masonry industry, commencing in 1990.
