Excellence In Masonry Award
continued from page 5 travel distances between patient rooms, nursing stations and ancillary support space.
The building opens onto the Hudson River and is visible from Riverside Drive and the Henry Hudson Parkway. When the new site was selected, the long open view of the Mainframe was deliberately exposed to emphasize the public prominence of the Hospital. The gridlike quality of the Mainframe's brick masonry, with its stacked bond joints, contrasts with the surrounding buildings, yet the hue of the masonry allows the building to relate to its context.
The Mainframe represents a departure from the surrounding buildings, thus symbolizing the Hospital's leadership and technological advancement, while at the same time relating to the existing campus.
In presenting the award, Masonry Institute Chairman Anthony Zotollo said, "The Presbyterian Hospital deserves recognition because it is a successful example of how a new building sensitively relates to the existing campus yet goes beyond to point in a new design direction. The Skidmore office obviously created a masterful design for this important project. But no design, no matter how well conceived and well detailed, ever comes to reality without the combined efforts of a great number of dedicated people working as members of the design/building team." Mr. Zotollo then presented the prize winning check of $5,000 to Michael McCarthy, SOM's design partner who then turned the check over to the hospital's president.
Knox College, Galesburg, III., has announced plans to stabilize its historic, century-old Alumni Hall building. The College's Board of Trustees has approved a stabilization effort estimated at $400,000, which will prevent any further deterioration. Built in 1889-90, Alumni Hall was designed by famed architect Elijah E. Meyers. Built to house two College debating societies in matching east and west wings, the flamboyant edifice's central section held the College library and a large theater. The cornerstone of the central portion was laid by U.S. President Benjamin Harrison on October 8, 1891. The stabilization plan will primarily entail replacing the slate roof and repairing entryways. The cost of fully renovating the building has been estimated at $3 million. "It is expected that money to renovate Alumni Hall will be raised following the completion of the current phase of the Sesquicental Capital Development Program," John P. McCall, president of the College said.
