Excellence In Masonry '88 Awards
Illinois Indiana Masonry Council Program

Gold Medal Award
First Bank of Oak Park, Illinois (cover photo) was the winner of the Illinois Indiana Masonry Council's Gold Medal Award for 1988. The architects were Nagle Hartray & Associates, Ltd. Ceisel Masonry was the mason contractor and Anton Feiter, job foreman.

Judges Comment: "This is a building that seems to be in contact with Oak Park. It reflects Chicago's rich heritage of architecture, and yet, it is done in a very modest way. The simplicity of the brick detailing was beautifully executed. Too much of today's architecture has detail upon detail. However, this building has elegantly reflected the best of architecture today."

Silver Medal Awards
Chicago Historical Society addition, Chicago, Illinois, with architects Holabird & Root with Crouch-Walker Corp. the mason contractor. Job foreman was Willie Bauerle.

Judges Comment: "We appreciate the organization of the building and the way the building was structured. A unique style was created by perching a massive brick wall upon a very strong yet graceful stone base. Glass and metal elements were introduced to express its entrance and use. We think the way the architect worked with the proportioning of the building is admirable. An excellent project."

Student Residence and Commons, University of Illinois at Chicago, designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz & Associates, Inc. Masonry by Garth Construction Co., Inc., with Norman Graves the job foreman.

Judges Comment: "This was a much discussed choice among the jury because of its degree of post-modern cliches, and its admirable strengths. It employs a clever University plan with a lower scale for pedestrians. This project reintroduces the park concept, through the use of squares, paths, and roads of access."

Illinois Bell Telephone Equipment Building. Prairie View, Illinois, designed by Holabird and Root with Carsten Reinbach the job foreman.

Judges Comment: "This was one of the few buildings in the competition that was considered for its modern architectural detailing. The volumetrics are beautiful. It's a classic little building. The architect did wonders with this program. The building is reminiscent of the '60's."

Honorable Mention/Bronz Medal Awards were presented to the following: Cone & Kalb, Architects for the Broadway Unitd Methodist Church and Paul Harding & Associates for the Isidore Church Parish Facilities Building with Mar-Lu Masonry. Two additional Honorable Mention Awards were presented to Lohan Associates, Crouch-Walker Corp. for the McDonald Campus Office Building and to Solomon Cordwell Buenz & Associates, Larmco Co., Inc. for Oak Brook Center.
