Central PA Awards
The Masonry Contractors Association of Central Pennsylvania held its Architect's Reception and Excellence in Masonry Design program recently at the Sheraton Harrisburg West.
Curtis, Cox, Kennerly of Philadelphia received awards for its design work in the commercial category as well as the program's prestigious grand award on the office building at 96 South George Street, owned by Susquehanna Broadcasting Co., York. The judges declared this project to be a "powerful expression of urban monumentality," a well-crafted building with excellent masonry detailing using a variety of masonry materials in creating a formal structure which blends well with the building's location. The masonry contractor for the project was John E. Keener, Inc., Mechanicsburg.
Caretti, Inc. of Camp Hill was cited for its unique masonry work in the innovative design category on the H.A.C.C. (Harrisburg Area Community College) Public Safety Training Facility Burn Building in Harrisburg. Murray & Associates, Harrisburg, was the architect for the project.
Marshall, Erdman & Associates was honored in the institutional category for its design work on the Apple Hill Medical Center, York. The Keener firm was the job's masonry contractor.
Cited for its work in the renovation/restoration design category was Beyer Blinder-Belle for Strawberry Square, Phase II renovations which is a remarkable restoration of thirteen buildings in downtown Harrisburg. Houck & Company, Inc. of Harrisburg performed the masonry work which was honored for its high degree of craftsmanship.
The architectural firm of Gilboy, Stauffer, Giombetti, Skibinski & Bellante, Clarks Summit, received awards in the industrial category for its design work on Nabisco Brands, Inc., Wilkes-Barre, which is a massive, large-scaled industrial building.

In the structural/load-bearing category. Carretti, Inc. received awards for its masonry construction on the Eastern Distribution Center for the New Cumberland Army Depot. The Austin Co. was the architect for the job.
A special judges' craftsmanship award was also presented to the Caretti firm for its masonry work on the Fowler residence, Camp Hill, a single-family structure, which is a contemporary building in the Georgian tradition of formal classicism.
Another judges' award for creative masonry use was given to John E. Keener, Inc. for its work on Johnson Gallery (The Chimneys) in Hershey, a project demonstrating the versatility of masonry through three decorative chimneys. Harle Architects, Inc. of Mechanicsburg was the job's architect.
PC Introduces New Unit
Pittsburgh Corning Corporation announces the introduction of the PC GlassBlock Paver Unit, a new, versatile glass building component.
PC GlassBlock Paver Units are designed for use in horizontal installations such as stairways, walkways, skylights, and between-floor partitions in both commercial and residential structures. This new product can also be used in a variety of other flat, curved, vertical and horizontal applications.
Compatible with most concrete, steel and aluminum paver frame systems produced by various manufacturers, PC GlassBlock Paver Units have been successfully deadload tested in frame systems for up to 200 lbs. per square foot.
PC GlassBlock Paver Units are solid glass with dimensions of 6"x 6"x 1". Weighing only 2.8 lbs., each unit can withstand impact loads of approximately 150 inch pounds.
The multi-triangle DELPHI pattern is pressed into the bottom surface of each PC GlassBlock Paver Unit. It transmits light with a prismatic effect and provides good light transmission and maximum privacy.
A skid-resistant raised-line pattern is used on the top surface and complements the DELPHI pattern below.
