Current State of the Association

Featured speaker was M. Todd Foley, Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA. The President, Foley advised, has ordered all federal agencies to delay any new programs for ninety days, for review as to economic impact. Meeting the mandates of Congress, OSHA's new civil penalty policy is now the law of the land, said Foley. The new policy mandates maximum, not minimum penalties, and includes a potential for a ninety-five percent discount, dependent upon such factors as company size and good intentions.

OSHA will recommend veto of pending consumer safety legislation proposed by the House, reported Foley. OSHA, he said, is reviewing an extensive reform package and recommended that MCAA members review the proposals as they're made public, and make their views known.

Following the opening session, regional breakout sessions were held, at which regional vice presidents discussed key issues facing masons in their regions and general topics of interest to them.

Workshops Well Attended

Three well-attended MCAA workshops, which ran concurrently, were held Saturday morning at the Peabody Hotel. Topics covered getting the order, OSHA and your legal rights and techniques to increase masonry sales and profits. The most popular, the OSHA workshop, greatly exceeded attendance expectations and many attendees monitored the session from the halls.

Dr. Janet Sanders, Clayton Consulting Group, St. Louis, Missouri, in her workshop session, "Getting in the Door-and Out With the Order," discussed various methods of getting past the prospect's secretary, conducting a sales call and increasing the chance of getting out with the order. "OSHA and Your Legal Rights" panelists Donald Grant of Grant, Incorporated, St. Louis mason contractor; George Plumb, MCAA legal counsel; and Gerald Reidy of OSHA, discussed ways in which OSHA has become a more prevalent factor on

SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS and committee meetings at the Peabody, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, were well attended. They covered a variety of topics, from estimating to OSHA compliance.
