Evan L. Harris Dies

EVAN L. HARRIS, founder and chairman of the board of E. L. Harris and Son, long time Charleston, West Virginia building construction firm, died March 8 at his home in Stuart, Florida. Born in Charleston in 1910, he attended schools in Charleston and graduated from the civil engineering college of West Virginia University in 1931.

After short tenures with Columbia Gas and DuPont Chemical, Harris joined his father in the construction business in 1932. Since that time he has remained active in construction and real estate in the Kanawha Valley. In 1947, Harris was instrumental in the formation of the Mason Contractors Association of America, serving for two years as its first vice president. He continued to serve on the board of directors of the Association for many years and was recognized by MCAA with their "Lead Man" award at the national convention in Dallas in 1985. This prestigious award is given annually to a leader in the masonry industry. He also served as president of the Charleston Masonry Contractors Association, the Kanawha Valley Builders Association and the Contractors Association of West Virginia. He served as national president of the American Business Club, a civic organization with programs to help children with physical and mental disabilities, and held memberships in the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge. Harris is survived by his wife, Sallie, two sisters, daughter Helen Schuiling, son Richard, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mark Hogan, P.E., director of engineering for the National Concrete Masonry Association since 1987, has been named vice president of engineering by NCMA. In his new position, he will oversee the association's ongoing engineering activities, including model codes activities, design development and technical research and publications.

Walter E. Galantly, Jr., president of NABD for the past fifteen years, is leaving the association to start a national management consulting firm specializing in trade association convention and meeting planning and sports marketing. He will continue to serve as the executive director of the Masonry Fireplace and Chimney Association. William Reimer, who has been with Consolidated Brick in New York for eleven years, has been named to replace Gwin Whitney as NABD chairman.

HISTORIC RENOVATION

Throughout our long history, Graciano Corporation has been at the forefront of balancing technology with a genuine understanding of historic significance. While new building materials are often easy to work with and more readily available, usually they aren't the primary choice for historic restoration. In order for us to restore to museum quality, exact materials and methods used in the original manufacturing process must be duplicated. Re-learning and mastering original techniques is where the artistry of our restoration is evident.

GLEN FOGLIO is president of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based Graciano Corporation. With locations in Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C., Graciano is recognized as a leader in historic preservation and restoration projects throughout the United States.
