to discuss association activities and other industry matters from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, followed by meetings of the masonry panels, legislative and constitution and bylaws committees from 3:30 to 5 pm.



Friday morning, February 26, was devoted to seminars and workshops - People Management in Construction and Capturing More Masonry Markets. Friday afternoon's highlight was the MCAA Masonry Industry Golf Tournament at the beautiful Aviara Four Seasons Golf Course in Carlsbad, California. Designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, the championship 18 hole course was cited by Golf Magazine for its outstanding layout and variety among its holes.



Saturday morning workshops were devoted to the subjects of OSHA and Your Rights, Quality Control and Transferring the Family Business. Afternoon workshops covered Staining Masonry, Cleaning Masonry, Grouting Reinforced Masonry and Better and Safer Fireplaces.



Following presentation of colors by the Marine Color Guard from the nearby San Diego U.S. Marine Corps Base, MCAA President Richard Matthews delivered his State of the Association Address, outlining his vision for the coming year to conference attendees at the 10:00 am opening session. Also featured was keynote speaker Tandy Rice, who made an encore appearance with his entertaining and motivational address.



Spouse program highlight for the day was a whale watching cruise. Despite calm but cool weather, it was sadly reported that no whales were sighted.



Masonry Expo's Welcoming Reception, in the Marina Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel, Saturday evening, was the first official event for Masonry Expo '93. Record crowds attended an open bar reception with hors d'oeuvres and entertainment. Participants from all Expo sponsor groups, as well as all exhibitors, were in attendance to welcome guests.

to visit a concrete block plant in full operation. Included in the tour was a sandblasting operation, concrete crushing and a recycling system. Visitors were able to view the production of slump block, interlocking pavers and double open end bond beams.



MCAA's Annual Meeting opened at 8:00 am in the Marriott's Marina Ballroom, with President Richard Matthews presiding. Year end committee reports, regional and financial reports were presented. Awards for new member recruiting in 1992-93 were presented to the winners. Top recruiter for the year was Don Larsen, Thorleif Larsen and Son, Itasca, Illinois, for ten new members, for which he won a round trip airline ticket to San Diego for the Expo. Special recognition was given to George Miller, attending his last MCAA Conference and Masonry Expo in his official capacity as MCAA Executive Vice President, who retired following the Expo.



Sunday's seminar topics were Time Management and Bridging the Gender Gap, following which the Keynote Speaker Luncheon was held at the San Diego Convention Center. Masonry Expo '93 was officially opened following the ribbon cutting ceremony, from 1:30 to 5:30 pm, Sunday. Products and services for every industry need went on display at the San Diego Convention Center. Some 225 companies displayed their products and services.



A cocktail reception was held in the Marriott Hotel's Bayview Room Sunday evening for Masonry Magazine's advertisers and Editorial Advisory Board members.



Following seminars on Constructing Masonry Under the 530 Code Specifications and Selling Masonry in a Competitive Marketplace, the ever-popular Rough Terrain Forklift Demonstration and Material Handling Showcase was held at the San Diego Convention Center Monday morning. Continued on Page 50
