PEOPLE IN THE NEWS

Jack Timmons, salesmanager, Len Santoro, architectural sales, and Mike Thompsom, contractor sales for Oberfield's Delaware, Ohio, have successfully completed advanced sales training courses at the National Concrete Masonry Association education center in Herndon, Virginia. Timmons and Santoro completed the concrete paver sales course, and Thompson completed the concrete block sales training course.

Gerald E. Lane has been appointed vice president of the southeast division of Prime Equipment, one of the nation's largest equipment rental and sales companies serving the construction and industrial markets. In his new assignment, Lane will be responsible for operations of eighteen stores in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia.

The New York State Concrete Masonry Association at the annual meeting of the board elected officers and directors for the 1993-94 term of office. Elected were: Neal S. Spevack, chairman of the board, Smithtown Concrete Products, Smithtown, New York; Daniel P. Fricano, chairman elect, Barnes and Cone, Syracuse, New York; Norbert J. Rappl, treasurer, Comac Builder's Supply, Rochester, New York; and Kenneth Dagostino, past chairman, Dagostino Building Blocks, Schenectady, New York.

Mike Boucher has been named executive director of the Washington State Conference of Mason Contractors, replacing Bill Blackstone who will remain as consultant to the conference. Boucher is a former mason contractor and a graduate construction engineer from Iowa State University.

Steve A. Leach has joined the Chicago office of Glen-Gery Brick as Chicago brickwork design advisor.

Cynthia Scheiber has joined the sales and marketing staff of the Minkoff Company, as the director of business development. She replaces Nancy Miller, who left the firm to pursue personal endeavors. Minkoff is a Bethesda, Maryland based restoration specialist and general contractor.

Janet C. Crusing has been named executive vice president and Gary Amundson has been named vice president of manufacturing by AA Wire Products Company. Both have been with AA Wire for more than ten years.

Edgar F. Clock, Jr., AIA/CSI, has been named executive director of the Masonry Institute of St. Louis. A registered architect, Glock has been involved for 25 years in the architectural field, with construction administration and building and material evaluation being his major interests.

Contract Workers

MANY contractors make maximum use of contract workers to reduce taxes and cut the cost of benefits. Companies should be prepared to justify the status of contract workers, warns the IRS.

One major key, according to the IRS, is to be able to show that the contractors have independence in the way they perform their work-that the company judges only the results.
