10 Mistakes of Partnering
By LOU BAINBRIDGE
Consulting Group Director, FMI Corporation
THE MOST COMMONLY made mistakes in conducting the partnering process are all the result of the lack of some key ingredient:
1. Lack of trust: Partnering relationships without trust achieve nothing.
2. Lack of commitment: Commitment must be demonstrated through behavior.
3. Lack of supporting contract: The contractor must support the relationship.
4. Lack of communication: Say exactly what you want to say and recognize the importance of open communication.
5. Lack of team balance: The team won't function without balance. Recognize specific qualities each member can bring to the partnership.
6. Lack of time: Time is money.
7. Lack of money: If you find yourself with this problem, you weren't committed to the process in the first place.
8. Lack of measurables: How do you know where you want to be?
9. Lack of participation: Don't go flying off in different directions.
10. Lack of celebration: If you aren't celebrating successes, you aren't partnering.
