After a full day of briefings, ASC attendees had personal appointments with Representatives and Senators to seek support for bills such as OSHA Reform, Compensable Time and Estate Tax Reductions. "We met with some very influential members of Congress of which the most memorable was House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) who discussed the prospects for passage of OSHA Reform this year." During the exclusive meeting for the members of the Mason Contractors Association with Congressmen Armey and Hastert, MCAA members sought a commitment for a vote on OSHA Reform later this fall. MCAA Legislative Chairman Paul Clements, II, said "Both Majority Leader Armey and Majority Whip Dennis Hastert (R-IL) said that they will monitor the new Ballenger legislation and when it has the votes they will call it for a vote by the full House."
MCAA members also met in a private briefing and strategy session with Congressman Cass Ballenger who is the Chairman of the House Worker Protection Committee which oversees OSHA. During the private session, Congressman Ballenger discussed his strategy to pass his new OSHA Reform legislation HR 3234. "Congressman Ballenger asked MCAA to help him gather support from other industry groups to get members of Congress to sign on to his new bill," said MCAA President Donald Grant. Congressman Ballenger related that his committee will markup his bill in the next week, then vote it out of the committee for full committee consideration. A vote by the full House Economic and Educational Opportunities Committee may not happen until 218 co-sponsors of the Ballenger bill are on board. "I was pleased that Congressman Ballenger is committed to bring real reform of OSHA. As a manufacturer, who had been cited by OSHA, he shares our frustration in dealing with an out of control bureaucracy," said MCAA member Tom Daniel. Congressman Tom Ewing (R-IL) discussed his Regulatory Flexibility bill which he thanked ASC members for their help in getting it passed.
