LITERATURE REVIEW
Brick
National Architecture Publication Celebrates the Classically Upscale in Residential Brick.
A recent issue of Brick in Architecture, published by the Brick Institute of America (BIA), recognizes two brick projects that break conventional bounds of residential quality, elegance and cost. Brick in Architecture is published four times a year and is inserted in Architecture magazine. Featured are The New American Home '96 in Houston, Texas and the New Albany Community and Country Club in New Albany, Ohio. The New American Home is the largest home ever created for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Annual Convention. The architects chose brick because it contributed to the home's historical flavor and enable them to create a richly varied surface for a more intimate result. Brick also was chosen for the majority of the New Albany homes and its Country Club for similar reasons. The brick, used in the Georgian tradition, gives the community a sense of historic strength and traditional appeal. According to the BIA Marketing Director Charles N. Farley, brick is the best choice in designing residential homes. "The finest homes in the world are made of brick because it consistently provides quality, permanence, versatility and beauty. Homes created with brick possess a certain stature and elegance that cannot be matched." BIA is a 60-year-old trade organization serving brick manufacturers through marketing programs, government relations, manpower development, engineering and research.
NCMA Publishes Block Plant Safety Manual (Herndon, VA June 14, 1996)
A newly revised Safety Manual for Employees of Concrete Block Plants covers virtually all aspects of plant safety. Among the areas addressed in this definitive resource guide from the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) are: first aid; procedures for reporting injuries; proper lifting, material handling and machine safety, personal protective equipment requirements; fire safety, trucking operations; and, safety procedures for a wide range of block plant equipment. According to NCMA Vice President of Engineering Mark Hogan. "The Safety Manual can be updated and redistributed as manufacturers' capabilities change." Hogan added that NCMA is offering the manual at a price far below what block producers would incur if they attempted to develop a similar reference guide on their own. The Safety Manual (OP25A) can be ordered through NCMA's Publications Department at a retail price of $25 per manual. For complete information on related resources available from NCMA on safety issues, contact either the Association's publications or engineering departments. NCMA is the national organization representing manufacturers of concrete block, pavers, segmental retaining walls and related products. The Association carries out a wide range of technical, research, marketing, government relations, and other activities on behalf of its members. Drawing from Brick Distributors of Illinois Available.
Over the years we have had numerous occasions to review problems in residential construction. One of the more prominent complaints, when I receive them, is that water is leaking from the sill intersection between the foundation wall and the wood framing when ever there is wind driven rain. This is caused by either:
1. The flashing not being installed, or
2. The flashing not being installed correctly, or
3. The information contained in the drawings is dated, vague, or nonexistent.
To address this problem the Masonry Advisory Council has prepared a drawing. This drawing details the correct means for constructing brick veneer walls and installing flashing for residential construction. This drawing can be incorporated into the existing drawings with the architect's approval. Originals of the drawing are available on 24" X36" reproducible sheets for $6.00 a sheet. Space is available on the sheet to affix the appropriate project name to include a title box. We hope this information will be of assistance to you in preventing problems from occurring. ICRI Releases Guideline on Concrete Repair Materials.
One of the most significant documents to the concrete repair industry in many years has been released by the international Concrete Repair Institute. It was announced by Lawrence F. Hagan, ICRI Technical Director. The 32-page guideline, entitled Guide for Selecting and Specifying Concrete Repair Materials," has been in process for several years under the direction of a task group co-chaired by Peter Emmons, Structural Preservation Systems, Inc. of Baltimore, Maryland, and James E. McDonald, Research Civil Engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The document is designed to guide the user step-by-step through a carefully structured material selection process. Several check lists are included, each addressing a different set of requirements which must be met by the repair material. Much of the guideline focuses on the properties of repair materials, such as dimensional, durability, and constructibility properties. Appropriate test methods are referenced to help verify the performance of materials with respect to each property. The guideline is available at a price of $18 to ICRI members and $27 to non-members. To order, or for more information about ICRI, please call 703-450-0116, fax 703-450-0119, or e-mail to concrepair@aol.com.
