Masonry Contest
The masonry technical committee chairman for the fifth straight contest.
The contest was supported by donations of concrete block by Miller Material, brick from Sioux City Brick and mortar from Spec Mix, whose salesmen were "slingin' the mud" in support of the aspiring masons.
Sustaining members and sponsors of the contest included Associated General Contractors of America, Bon Tool Co., The Brick Industry Association, The Masonry Contest Technical Committee, Marshalltown Trowel Co, Mason Contractors Association of America, National Association of Brick Distributors, National Concrete Masonry Association, Portland Cement Association and Spec Mix.
Technical committee members for this year's masonry contest were Chairman Bill Kjorlien, Southern Brick Institute; Carl Bongiovanni, JR., Bon Tool Co.; Michael Adelizzi, Mason Contractors Association of America; Brian Carney, Spec Mix, Inc.; Nelson Cooney, Brick Institute of America; Charles "Chip" Deale, National Concrete Masonry Association; Rick Gunn, Rich Mix Products; Jimmy Harrell, Turnkey Masonry Supply Co.; Dennis Langley, Associated General Contractors of America Education and Research Foundation; Steve Lyons, Marshalltown Trowel Co.; and John Melander, Portland Cement Association.
The national technical committee was assisted by a national education team lead by Chairperson Todd Larson, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College; Charles Hubbard, Sullivan North High School; and Edward Mims, R.D. Anderson Applied Technology Center.
During the VICA Conference, over 3,500 outstanding vocational students, all state and regional champions, competed in 57 different trade, technical and leadership competitions. The contests effectively demonstrated their expertise in occupational skills required for trades such as electronics, technical drafting, precision machining, auto repairs, culinary arts and masonry.
Brick and concrete masonry medalists celebrate their accomplishments on stage at VICA National Skills and Leadership Conference awards ceremony. Technical committee representatives were also recognized.
