First to be Recognized

Ben Petrea of Stanfield, N.C., is our first Masonry Student of the Month. Petrea took first-place honors in the National Masonry Contest held in conjunction with the SkillsUSA VICA National Leadership and Skills Conference held in Kansas City, Mo. this past summer.

Petrea competed in the secondary division of the day-long contest and finished his shortly after lunch. "I'd have rather not stopped for lunch, but they made us," Petrea said.

After completing his composite project, Petrea was asked what a top finish would mean to him. "It would mean a lot of recognition, I guess; but it would really help my business," he said.

Petrea worked throughout high school, and now is working part-time in his own business and full-time for Canup Masonry.

Petrea comes from a long line of winning contestants from the State of North Carolina, but he seemed to feel no pressure because of it. "Heck. They were good," Petrea said. "They deserved to win."

Doug Drye is Petrea's instructor at Mt. Pleasant High School in Mt. Pleasant, N.C. Drye has had an outstanding record at the national contest. He's had six students qualify. Five students finished first and one finished second.

Drye credits the success of the masonry program in North Carolina to support from the industry. "Our students, our teachers and our schools are strongly supported with time, donations and scholarships from the industry. The concrete, brick and block people work together with the instructors. We get a lot of support," Drye said.
