Annual Masonry Guild Announces Architectural Award Winners

The 9th Annual Excellence In Masonry Architectural Awards program honored its award winning homes and commercial buildings during a special awards banquet held Friday, October 27, 2000, at the Scottsdale Conference Resort. The program honored seven projects for outstanding masonry design, workmanship and creativity with the use of brick, block, or natural stone. This year's Gold Trowel winner (the top honor) was the Center for Health Careers Education, Gateway Community College, in Phoenix. According to Clark Philipp Stevens, A.I.A., principal of RoTo Architects, Inc. in Los Angeles and chairman of the award program's panel of jurors, the project won because masonry was used is an inventive and skillful way.

"The project demonstrated exemplary architecture in the use of masonry to create natural beauty in a larger public building (over 75,000 feet), when many buildings of this type are less than aesthetically pleasing," remarked Stevens. "The use of different masonry products, colors and sophisticated details resulted in a stunning graphic quilt-like pattern. The building's unique design and beauty was further enhanced with the contrast of steel and masonry, light vs. heavy material. It was one of the most appealing aspects of the design."

The project architect was Jay Silverberg, A.I.A., of Gould Evans Associates, L.C., Phoenix. The structural engineer was Rudow & Berry, Inc., Scottsdale. The general contractor was Javcon, Phoenix. The masonry contractor was Sun Valley Masonry, Inc., Phoenix and the supplier was Superlite Block, Phoenix.
