OTHER STAINS

There are a number of other stains, which may show up on the face of wall systems. These technically may not be efflorescence, but are a concern to owners.

White scum is generally the residue of the cleaning process caused by lack of water during the cleaning process. The cleaner evaporated before the mortar residue is washed away. A similar reaction would occur if the brick is not saturated prior to cleaning and the cleaning solvent is absorbed into the wall. Neither of these is considered efflorescence.

Proprietary cleaners can remove other stains such as vanadium, manganese and lime run, but much investigation is required to match cleaner to stain.

CAUTION: Try tests to determine best solution and do not jump to fixes, which could be worse than the original complaint.
