Letter to the Editor
Dear Tom,
In the May 2002 issue of Masonry, an article appeared ("Climb the Ladder," page 24) which made comments about our products. Several of those comments need to be addressed as we feel they were either in error or have been corrected by our company. We don't want our customers or potential customers to be mislead.
Hohmann & Barnard, Inc. has always been responsive to feedback from all of the sources that we deal with on a daily basis, from individual masons to the architectural community. Many of the advances in our product line have arisen through the assimilation of such feedback and the subsequent development of products that address the needs of the masonry industry.
It should first be noted that the drawings shown in "Figure A" and "Figure B" were apparently reversed. We called this to the attention of the editor when the article first ran in The Story Pole magazine but apparently no one rectified this error before the article was run in Masonry.
We highlighted, in an advertisement in The Story Pole, our new "Lap-Rite Ladder," which had been in fabrication even before this article first appeared and which addresses the concerns brought out in it. This product has cross-rods welded at 16-inch centers and each piece is 10-feet long, a convenient length that has been the industry standard for decades. On each end of the Lap-Rite Ladder, the first cross-rod is butt-welded at 12-inches, easily facilitating 8-inch laps with no waste of material while keeping the block cores clear. The standard length per piece of reinforcement remains at 10-feet.
The article also references the need for an adjustable reinforcing product that will prevent buildup of wire where eyelets or loops are welded onto the side rods. Again, we have our new "Tru-Joint" product line that consists of a flattened eye or loop portion where the side-to-cross-rod welding takes place. This markedly reduces the thickness at the weld point, allowing the mason to easily maintain a standard 3/8-inch joint thickness, even when 3/16-inch side-rods and cross-rods are specified.
We have invested a great deal of capital into machinery and tooling to fabricate these and other recently developed products with ease of installation and structural viability in mind. We thank our customers for their feedback, which has led to these innovations, and hope that all masons feel free to contact us with their comments.
