# Colorado

Winter introduces a slower season for most of the masonry industry, but not at the Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute (RMMI). With an increase in the number of members being available in their offices, rather than running from job site to job site, RMMI Executive Director Larisa LaBrant was able to spend some quality time with many of them.

"It's good to spend time with the members in their offices, learning about their businesses and how RMMI can meet their needs," LaBrant said. "I've learned a lot about what we are doing right, and what we can do better."

Overall, she has found that area masonry companies are not seeing the residential slow-down as reported by the national press. For RMMI's member mason contractors, business is booming. At the same time, the commercial masons are seeing an upswing in their market as well. It looks like the Colorado and Wyoming markets are taking a healthy turn, despite the national forecasts.

Also, RMMI held its annual holiday party at the Denver Press Club on Dec. 9. The staff and members enjoyed a traditional Victorian Christmas, while also gathering toys and raising funds for Toys for Tots.

# Executive Board Position Approved for Associates

Michael Adelizzi, Executive Director
Mason Contractors Association of America

The Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) Board of Directors approved in concept an Executive Board position for the Association's National Associate members and has agreed to present a bylaws change governing this new position to the membership at the Annual Meeting on Feb. 22, 2007, at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, Fla.

The purpose of this new Associate Executive Board position is to give dues paying National Associate members a formal vote on Association matters. In principle, the agreement is to allow the MCAA National Associate members to elect a representative who will serve a term of office equal to that of other Executive Board members. The Associate Board position will be allowed one vote on Board matters.

MCAA members will receive the bylaws change proposal prior to the Annual Meeting.

Florida (MCAF), six Tampa Bay-area mason contractors were presented awards for their participation in the Florida reBuilds Initiative, an opportunity to offer incentive-based entry and advanced-level training to their employees. This training is facilitated by the Florida Masonry Apprentice & Educational Foundation, Inc. (FMAEFI) and the Florida reBuilds Initiative.

The Florida reBuilds Initiative counters Florida's current need for more than 13,000 skilled workers in the construction trade. Working with 24 regional workforce boards, agencies, and public and private educational and training institutions, Florida reBuilds equips those interested in construction/masonry careers with the training and skills necessary to succeed in the industry. The training providers and participating mason contractors received funds to offer classroom and on-the-job training to program participants.
