Porter, president of The Masonry Society (TMS), presented J. Patrick Rand with the 2005 President's Award for his exceptional contributions to the success of the society at the TMS annual meeting on Oct. 15. During the presentation, Porter noted that the award recognized Rand's career of achievement and his never-ending support of the society. Rand is a professor at North Carolina State University.

Rand has made numerous contributions to TMS and to the subject of masonry. During the presentation of the award, Porter noted that Rand has made more than 28 presentations to the University Professors Masonry Workshops and, accordingly, many members of the architecture faculty have benefited directly from Rand's knowledge. Porter also noted that Rand has produced more than 62 publications, papers and oral presentations since 1990.

For TMS, Rand has assumed numerous leadership roles, including the positions of president and the first chair of the TMS Sustainability Subcommittee. (Rand is the first architect to have been elected president of TMS, as well as the first architect to have been selected as recipient of the TMS President's Award.) He is also co-leading the University Masonry Education Survey, which was conducted early in 2005.

In addition to the above TMS activities, Rand is active in professional practice as principal of a firm that bears his name. He is also an active member in the American Institute of Architects and has served on a National Architectural Accrediting Board accreditation team.

Rand has previously won several awards, including his university's Outstanding Teacher Award, Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor Award for the college in 1997 and 2003, and the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor for the university in 1994.
