QUIKRETE’s Contribution to Miami’s Marlins Park

Words: Frank OwensMarlin’s Park, the new home of the Miami Marlins, breaks the mold of Major League Baseball’s “retro-look” baseball parks. The contemporary design features a five-acre retractable roof, an aquarium inside the walls of the home plate backstop, and a nightclub and swimming pool just beyond the left field wall.

The $640 million, 37,000-seat stadium was built on the site of the old Orange Bowl in the area known as Little Havana, offering a panoramic view of downtown Miami.

QUIKRETE supplied the masonry subcontractors on the project with more than 27,000, 80-pound bags of Mason Mix — Type S for use in the construction of all load-bearing and non-structural masonry walls throughout the stadium.

QUIKRETE Core-Fill Grout — fine also was used to fill the cavities of the structural walls. QUIKRETE provided 4,950 bags of 80-pound Mason Mix — White, formulated with an Integral Water Repellant (IWR), for setting more than colored glass block. The QUIKRETE IWR additive resists the penetration of water from wind-driven rain.

QUIKRETE Mason Mix is a high-strength, Commercial Grade, Type S mortar mix that achieves a compressive strength of more than 1,800 psi at 28 days and exceeds the requirements of ASTM C 270 and ASTM C 1714.
